Will Face Masks be Incorporated in Fashion? Is this a good idea?

One question that lingers my mind as a fashionista, is if the recent need for face masks will eventually be incorporated in couture and soon enough, everyone will adopt the same concept of face masks like Asian countries. However, instead of containing your breath and preventing the spread of germs; it’s used as an accessory. Even stranger yet, will luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Gucci try to make money if they made their own version of these face masks using their fancy leather or slapping their logo on them? The better question is: is it a good idea to incorporate face masks in fashion?

Patterns Galore!

Prior to shelter-in-place, I observed the general student body at SJSU and found that a large portion of our population gravitated towards patterns; rather than simple colors and wearing the “basic” t-shirt with a singular color. This totally made sense, as San Jose really capitalized on name brands and is huge in the streetwear side–so I wanted to document some of the most popular patterns that I saw on campus.

The Future of Runways: My Prediction

For as long as I could remember, it has been my dream to one day watch a fashion show with the catwalk and everything! The ability to see the latest trends of my favorite fashion designer, and be up close and personal with models like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner. That being said, is our future with runways going to change now that coronavirus is a problem, and will likely last for years? Here are my thoughts on the future of runway fashion shows.

Tik Tok: A New Source for Fashion Marketing?

Quarantine certainly allocates plenty of time to doze off, eat excess food, and perhaps stray away from our usual routine. That being said, a very popular social media app has been downloaded more and more; by people of all ages, and that is none other than Tik Tok. This app consists of audio bites that are condensed anywhere from 15-30 seconds and people make memes, do dances, and various challenges to pass the time and post them. That being said, Tik Tok has been the ultimate time waster and users are starting to notice more and more subtle marketing added, with fashion such as She In, Revolve, and Brandy Melville and these “clothing hauls”.

What is Cosplaying and Why is it Popular?

That’s right, I would classify cosplaying as part of the great, big world of fashion. Why? Well, for starters, it’s still clothes, and second: it’s widely known and popular around the world! Cosplaying has only gained more recognition and fame, as events like: AnimeCon, San Diego Comic Con, and various “nerd” events strongly encourage the act of dressing up like your favorite character from anime, comics, and books. Let’s dive into the great big world of cosplay!

What does the Fashion Industry have in store after Quarantine?

Although we all are figuratively dying to know when quarantine will end, the big question remains as a fashion enthusiast: what does the fashion industry have in store after quarantine? Is there going to be any drastic changes? Will this even still remain a multi-billion dollar industry? Although I don’t oversee the fashion industry as a whole, I have done careful analysis and observations to come to these various conclusions

Popular Kids Clothing Retailers

I wouldn’t consider myself a “know-it-all” when it comes to the top-notch, bang for your buck, best quality fashion when it comes to shopping for newborns all the way to big kids. However, after working in Nordstrom’s kids clothing department for six months, I am able to receive a good amount of feedback of where our customers shop when Nordstrom doesn’t have what they’re looking for. Here are some of the most popular stores that our Nordstrom customers gravitate towards, when Nordstrom misses their mark: Janie and Jack, Gap Kids, Gymboree, and Vineyard Vines.

The Ugly Side of Resellers Manifests in Supreme x Murakami “COVID-19 Relief” Box Logo T-shirt

It’s Friday, April 24th at 7:45AM. The sunlight is beaming through my window and I’m sleep deprived after falling asleep at 2AM. Eye bags aside, I open my laptop in hopes of obtaining one of the most sought after Supreme products: the box logo t-shirt. I make this a big deal in the name of fashion and my love for Takashi Murakami’s art. I was beyond excited to be awake for something that roughly 17,000 could also own. The real question was, “Am I actually going to get this shirt?”

In-Home Fashion

During this global pandemic of the “novel” COVID-19, people are doing their best to stay home and limit exposure as much as possible. That being said, there’s likely a number of people across the United States opting to lounge in pajamas, sweatpants, or baggy t-shirts. In terms of at-home comfort, I’m going to offer up a couple suggestions on what to wear if you’re feeling like you want to wear something a little nicer–for yourself and no one else!

Favorite Scarves this Season

With scarves being an accessory often associated with winter or fall, who’s to say they also can’t be worn in warmer weather? With coronavirus scaring people into their houses, and trying to stay warm from this current Bay Area rain–scarves are still acceptable to wear both in the house and outside. In this post, I’m going to share my favorite scarves for this season.

The Potential Popular Colors for Spring 2020

As we’re just at the start of Spring, we are already seeing a change in season but also clothing trends. That’s where we begin to ask ourselves: what will the hottest colors be this season? Although I’m personally no fashion expert, I consider myself a fashion aficionado who carefully analyzes trends in my free time and enjoys people watching enough to catch onto what the industry is planning for the public.

Smelling out the Trendiest Flower Patterns

One of the most timeless patterns in fashion will always be flowers. It’s fascinating how we never seem to get tired of them, and for as long as time–we’ve appreciated the aesthetic of them. It was only a few years ago, roses were considered the hottest thing to have on any denim jacket, t-shirt, or even shoes!

Predicted Trends for Spring 2020

Paying close attention to fashion both through my peers and social media, I have the tendency to scope out up-and-coming trends for every season. Last summer, I predicted that the hottest color of the season would be lavender, or light purple. Much to my surprise (but not really), I saw light purple and lavender shades flying off the clothing racks in the form of shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, and skirts. This time, I think I nailed the upcoming trends amidst the coronavirus keeping folks inside.

Are Luxury Brands Worth the Money?

Ever wondered why certain brands are valued and recognized over others? Is it shrewd marketing or quality manufacturing that helps these products stand out as luxuries? Does public opinion play a role in conveying quality and brand influence, in addition to making individuals feel special? By understanding how luxury brands can impact an individual’s emotions and feelings of self worth, it becomes more apparent that the true value of luxury brands shouldn’t only be reflected in just the price.

A Philosophical view on Fashion

Fashion is defined as being something based on trends or what’s considered trendy. Keeping this in mind, we begin to recognize how in a way, fashion is an art form. We get to pick and choose what we believe looks good, and we find something that makes us feel good. However, often times–we judge what makes us feel good through acceptance or recognition from others. Ultimately, fashion is created or developed by other people and we can say something looks bad–all because we’re inspired or believe something looks better. Do we genuinely form our own thoughts about fashion, or is there a preconceived idea of what looks good–all because at the end of the day, we aren’t the ones really making clothes.

The Rise and Fall of Juicy Couture

One of the most iconic brands in the early 2000’s was Juicy Couture. How could we forget the iconic crowns, terriers, and hot pink hues to commemorate our fashion icons like Paris Hilton or Britney Spears? This era was all about being a “princess” regardless if you were a teenager, a mother, or even a grandmother.

Hypebeast Culture

One of the most common trends I’ve seen throughout SJSU campus is a minimalistic, red box logo that spells out “Supreme” in white italics. This design can cost you up to $150 for a sweatshirt, or even $200 NWT (new with tags) through resellers on websites like StockX or Grailed. This is just one of many iconic pieces that defines streetwear culture to the millennials and Gen Z kids. Continue reading “Hypebeast Culture”

Why do I love Fashion?

Throughout high school, people called me our high school’s very own “Fashion Queen”. People were well aware of my passion for it, and they would always ask questions along the lines of: “Mallory, why do you love fashion so much?” or “Why does fashion interest you?” To which I always responded, “Clothes are considered a necessity. If given the option to make them fun and aesthetically pleasing, why would you not go for it?”
