Alessandro Michele

Alessandro Michele is well-deserving of being one of the best designers of 2020; as he revamped the Gucci brand within the past three years, and made it more than an “old luxury Italian brand”, attracting many A-list celebrities such as Lil Pump–making the brand more “hype” and appealing to younger consumers. Gucci was already a well-recognized brand around the world, but thanks to his creative designs and direction–Gucci has easily stayed relevant for people of all ages. Alessandro is currently the creative director for Gucci, and has been working with them since 2015.

Alessandro Michele had a humble beginning growing up in Rome, Italy–and attended Academia di Costume e di Moda, specializing in none other than: fashion design. After studying in college, he began working with Fendi as a “Senior Accessories Designer” and was responsible for overseeing the creative direction and design for all Fendi accessories. Shortly after this in 2002, Alessandro Michele was moved to Gucci’s London office and was frequently promoted from “Leather Goods Design Director”, to “Associate”, to his present-day role as a Creative Director, taking the place of Frida Giannini.

Using his power for the better, he launched a new creative direction for Gucci during the runway show for Gucci Men in the Fall/Winter 2015-2016. His works were turning more towards bold colors and more “in your face” designs, rather than the subtle look that Gucci used to fall back on. Fast forward to a year later, he was recognized as being one of the most powerful, influential people in the fashion industry; changing the general direction for Gucci, and being successful at doing so.

Present-day, Gucci is seen practically everywhere and it is the “favored” luxury brand, even for the younger demographic. Gucci attracts YouTube influencers as young as 16; to the sweet, Italian grandmothers who always stood by the Gucci brand. Alessandro Michele effectively found a middle ground for both young people and older people to enjoy–without making it inappropriate with age; as Gucci carries items like the classic black GG Marmont bag, using a black leather, elegantly quilted with a brass letter “G”; to an all around “G”, floral scarf–bound to make people’s heads turn when they see the wild pattern.
