One question that lingers my mind as a fashionista, is if the recent need for face masks will eventually be incorporated in couture and soon enough, everyone will adopt the same concept of face masks like Asian countries. However, instead of containing your breath and preventing the spread of germs; it’s used as an accessory. Even stranger yet, will luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Gucci try to make money if they made their own version of these face masks using their fancy leather or slapping their logo on them? The better question is: is it a good idea to incorporate face masks in fashion?
In my opinion, I think incorporating face masks into couture/style magazines–anything to grab people’s attention would be an excellent idea. Not only would people feel more inclined to follow this (as it is fashion), but it also is an opportunity for businesses to make additional money, selling such a useful accessory. Granted, these are far from “fashionable” from the lens of people during this time, but perhaps with a marketing push and the fashion industry willing to follow through, we can really change the face of COVID-19 and even the simple common cold.

Fashion is one of the most influential industries in the world. In a way, it controls how people live and how it makes people feel. With enough marketing and taking the correct advertising measures, perhaps people will get more hooked on the look, rather than the entitled attitude of “not needing a mask” since everyone else has one. We live in a world where there are tons of “Karens”, which is lingo for entitled people, often perceived as the “common white elitist mom” but also come in the form of other genders in different races. Perhaps this might be the best way to even sway the most “elite”, knowing that they are partaking in the latest and greatest trends–it truly boils down to social pressure and buying into fashionable trends.
The second part that I want to dive into more is knowing that it’s a quick way to make money for these brands. Even if COVID-19 miraculously disappeared from our planet forever, people would likely still want to purchase these–knowing that they’re prepared for any other major outbreak of illness or disease. Not to mention, I think these would be really cute to have–as people often wear face masks as a look for festivals, raves, and various concerts. I in fact, have one from Anti Social Social Club and wore it to Gryffin back in November! I received tons of compliments on it and its truly an accessory that’s worth making money off of for these big brands, luxury or not.
All in all, I really hope the fashion industry considers trying to push for face masks in a way that isn’t focused around public health–as the “Karens” seem far from concerned in that regard, thinking that everyone else being protected– leaves them exempt from the face mask use. Perhaps many problems surrounding that, would be fixable through the fashion industry by including face masks in look books in fashion magazines to Youtube “Get the Look” videos in order to encourage face mask use and help flatten the curve and make future potential outbreaks less crazy. All in all, the fashion industry has so much gain from this including more money and the opportunity to shape the minds of people.
