The World of “Disney Bounding” and the Culture Behind it

Disney has definitely made a name for itself, which extends beyond its various parks around the world! Disney has left its mark on the world with the assortment of movies, merchandise, and television shows that we continue to cherish dearly. Disney never fails to have an incredible marketing team, and hold people’s interest, beyond stepping foot in the parks. Today, we’re going to dive into the world of Disney bounding, and how people even partake in this trend–outside of being at the park.

Disney bounding is dressing up as your favorite Disney character, but without looking exactly like them in costume. In other words, it is a very subtle way of putting together outfits that mimic your favorite character, just by using colors. For instance, to dress up like Winnie the Pooh–Disney bounders will wear yellow shorts paired with a red crop top. This unique culture has only been around for a few years, but was established in response to Disneyland banning adults from wearing costumes of their favorite Disney characters–which detracts from the real characters working in the park–and eliminates confusion for kids. By Disney bounding, adults can still enjoy dressing up, but in an appropriate manner for Disney standards.

Believe it or not, there are tons of Disney fanatics who will take Disney bounding outside of the parks and wear these subtle Disney character outfits to work and on outings. Although I was unable to pinpoint specific Instagram accounts of Disney bounders; there are plenty of style Instagrams such as @thedisneybound who encourage people to try their outfit ideas and take inspiration from others. The real beauty behind this, is that everyone perpetuates the “Disney magic” and allow others to steal ideas and inspiration from one another, and it really creates a camaraderie when roaming around the parks and seeing others Disney bounding too.

All in all, this culture really captures the wholesome “Disney magic” and it is incredible that adults find subtle ways of always being young at heart. Although I do not consider myself a total Disney fanatic, I would be interested in trying this out the next time I go to the park. The fact I can even work with clothes that are already in my closet, and its all about color and perception–makes it all more exciting if someone at the park approaches me and asks me if I’m embodying a specific character.
