The Future of Runways: My Prediction

For as long as I could remember, it has been my dream to one day watch a fashion show with the catwalk and everything! The ability to see the latest trends of my favorite fashion designer, and be up close and personal with models like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner. That being said, is our future with runways going to change now that coronavirus is a problem, and will likely last for years? Here are my thoughts on the future of runway fashion shows.

The first thing that is probably going to change is the seating arrangements. In other words, when we see catwalk fashion shows–the audience is very often grouped together, chairs leaning right next to each other, leaving little space between each person sitting. The first thing that will change is the seating, creating a wider distance between each guest: sitting next to, behind, or in front of. Additionally, more space between the guests and the runway models, just to take safety precautions.

Additionally, I will assume there will be changes to the model line-up, and perhaps the ending where all the models are grouped together, or two models are walking at a time–that will be eliminated. Although this allows people to have a chance to see the whole collection of the season, and almost create a big “fashion family” this unfortunately seems far too risky having models walk so close to one another, and especially initiating hand holding contact, spreading germs in an unnecessary way. Additionally, perhaps runways will cycle through less models, just requiring more outfit changes with the same 10-12 models to be extra cautious. However, this may make a bad social statement, implying the “society perfect” look is embodied in 12 models–but hopefully, there will be a stronger understanding between the everyday person and the people who run these fashion shows.

The last aspect that would likely change is the general sanitation of the building. In past runway shows I have watched prerecorded, there will have to be more measures with mopping down the runway and floors, as well as perhaps giving complimentary sanitary Clorox wipes for guests to clean up their seats before and after the show. Perhaps they can subtly add sanitation wipes in their “Thank you” goodie bags with some additional marketing on the packaging! Anything helps right?

All in all, even though this doesn’t directly affect the vast majority of us (since we’re not invited to these types of events)–I would be curious to see how thorough the sanitation would be. Luckily, it seems that the adjustments of seating, having fewer models/more spaced out walks, and encouraging personal sanitation/a more thorough clean-up will not change these events in any way–and might make for a more pleasant, safe time.
