Smelling out the Trendiest Flower Patterns

One of the most timeless patterns in fashion will always be flowers. It’s fascinating how we never seem to get tired of them, and for as long as time–we’ve appreciated the aesthetic of them. It was only a few years ago, roses were considered the hottest thing to have on any denim jacket, t-shirt, or even shoes!

Fast forward to 2020, flowers continue to flourish in the fashion industry–especially in clothes that cater towards millennials and Gen Z kids. In fact, places like Urban Outfitters and PacSun sell many articles of clothing containing some type of flower. In terms of the hottest flowers this season, I broke it down and analyzed why these may be the most popular.

The hibiscus flower is the up-and-coming flower design on the market. Why? Well, with the transition of seasons–people are psyched about summer; and summer reminds people of a tropical getaway! I would expect to see more orangey-yellow tones of this popular, tropical flower. Additionally, this flower holds a special place in brands like Tommy Bahama, so we should only expect brands such as these to amp up the presence of hibiscus on clothing everywhere!

The second flower that we already see a lot of is the orange poppy. Native to California, it is no surprise I see so many students wearing graphic shirts with this flower on it. This flower is vibrant in color, and is very minimalistic compared to the hibiscus. Girls who wear the California poppy on their clothes are often trying to go for a “laid back, California girl” look. Additionally, this particular flower pattern is meant to be simple and not be an “in your face” design.

The final flower I am going to focus on, which I hope to see more of and already see becoming popular this spring is the cherry blossom. Often associated with oriental designs and fashions, this flower holds a lot of symbolism and simplistic beauty. The pink and white create a beautiful touch of color to any outfit, especially the fashion kimonos or even a bikini! Additionally, since this season focuses on a mixture of pops of color and minimalism, this flower is perfect for the looks women are trying to achieve this season. With fashion being about telling a story, cherry blossoms are symbolic of temporary beauty, and fleeting beauty–much similar to how fashion is defined; by changing trends and beauty that is “temporary”.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoy investigating and looking into the popular flowers of the season–and I genuinely hope to see more cherry blossom patterns, as I myself am a strong advocate for including them in Western clothing.
