Fashion is defined as being something based on trends or what’s considered trendy. Keeping this in mind, we begin to recognize how in a way, fashion is an art form. We get to pick and choose what we believe looks good, and we find something that makes us feel good. However, often times–we judge what makes us feel good through acceptance or recognition from others. Ultimately, fashion is created or developed by other people and we can say something looks bad–all because we’re inspired or believe something looks better. Do we genuinely form our own thoughts about fashion, or is there a preconceived idea of what looks good–all because at the end of the day, we aren’t the ones really making clothes.
It is up to the industry to produce clothes, and therefore tell us what looks good. In a way, we do not fully control what looks good. If we’re not in control, then who is? Well, the industry starts it. Then, it is up to people of power to promote it, and ultimately spread the word and create a sense of what is considered “acceptable” or “looks good” to the public. It is then up to the public to decide whether to accept it or reject it. In the harsh truth of it all, no one is really a “trendsetter” without the industry being the first to create the clothes for our disposal.

Although for years I have strived to be “different” with fashion, I have come to accept the fact that I too value how other perceived my looks and how I can make them “better” in the eyes of others. Is this considered bad or toxic? I don’t think so. In a way, it is exciting to experiment with other people’s thoughts or ideas, and see if they improve or drop my confidence. For the most part, I try to recognize that fashion is all about me and how I enjoy the hobby.
All in all, fashion continues to be one of the most fascinating industries and hobbies to me. It can be heavily reliant on the opinions of others, but also encourages consumers to embrace their individuality and personality at the same time. Without valuing the opinions of others, the fashion industry would not be as successful as it is today.
